Integrative Strategies and Insights for Families and Their Children with Special Needs

The Moro reflex is often referred to as the “startle” reflex. It is usually integrated by about 4-6 months. This retained reflex can manifest as jerky movements, sensitivity to lights and sounds, poor attention, lack of self-regulation, mood swings, easily startled, ADHD, and sensory overload, motion sickness, and poor balance and coordination.

The following are remedies to help integrate the Moro reflex:

* Starfish pose (laying flat on your back with arms and legs open like a starfish)

* Crunch up like a ball while sitting in a fetal position.

* Snow angels while lying on your back

* Engaging in activities while doing tummy time such as playing a game or reading a book, etc.

* Lying on your back on a therapy ball with arms stretched overhead

Retaining the Moro reflex can cause children to spend more time in fight or flight because there is a strong connection between a the Moro and lowered vagal tone. This can cause a dysregulation of the nervous system which impacts optimal neurodevelopment in children.
