We cannot discuss appropriate supplements completely without discussing lab testing. We need to “test not guess” when it comes to addressing specific nutrient deficiencies and how to best fill those gaps. Kids with ADD/ADHD, autism, etc. often have underlying issues leading to chronic health challenges. Lab data can uncover some of these underlying causes. The concept of bio individuality is an important one in choosing both labs and supplements. This encompasses genetic predispositions, environmental factors, and various metabolic imbalances. Standard reference ranges in labs are different from optimal levels because normal is not usually optimal. The normal ranges are based on the population that isn’t necessarily healthy. We always need to look at the big picture. Remember that reversal of chronic disease is a marathon not a sprint.
There are some basic labs that most pediatricians are familiar with as they are commonly requested for children. These include a CBC or a complete blood count and a CMP or a comprehensive metabolic panel. Sometimes a thyroid panel or a lipid panel is also recommended depending on the situation. Too many physicians do not regularly test vitamin D (25- hydroxy) levels which are critical markers for the immune system and overall health. Levels under thirty often correlate with many health risks including various autoimmune conditions and even an elevated risk for certain cancers. It is imperative that you know your child’s vitamin D levels. Remember that normal doesn’t always equate to optimal. A range between 50-80 is considered optimal and neuroprotective.
Two other inflammatory markers; CRP (c-reactive protein) and homocysteine levels are also helpful in looking at systemic inflammation in the body as well as folate levels. High levels of homocysteine can be indicative of anemia, poor immune response function, or even cognitive issues. Magnesium should also be evaluated periodically because much of the population is deficient in this important mineral. Magnesium is responsible for a host of functions in the body including muscle and nerve function as well as blood sugar regulation. An amino acid profile is another comprehensive lab panel that can provide a wealth of information. It is important to work with a practitioner or a health coach to help interpret the results and address appropriate deficiencies.
When there is a need to dig deeper, a functional or integrative physician can order tests that look closer at nutritional deficiencies, imbalances and toxins such as candida or heavy metals such as lead and mercury. One such test is a urine test called the Organic Acids Test (OAT). Sometimes a stool analysis or food sensitivity testing is warranted in getting to the root cause of whatever is going on with your child.
Every child can benefit from taking a good quality multi-vitamin as a base to supplementation. Vitamin D supplementation is essential as is vitamin K2 to ensure absorption. The dose is based on the lab results we discussed. Vitamin C and a fish oil supplement (EPA and DHA) are also basic. Omega 3 fatty acids are great for brain health. A good probiotic may also be beneficial. There are many supplements that can be used to strengthen the immune system depending on the child’s individuality and the deficiencies impacting the child’s health.
Hopefully, this brief synopsis will help you on your journey to achieving optimal health for your child. Always remember that this journey is a marathon; a lifelong journey to sustainable health and well being. It is modifiable along the way as each layer of the onion is peeled back; opening more doors to optimal health. The more we learn, the easier it gets so be patient with yourself and with your child and I promise that you will get to the other side. Knowledge is power so let’s keep learning as we move from the foundation of health to the school issues facing children with special needs who deal with insurmountable chronic health challenges in their daily lives.
